Sometimes life is just like that. You feel like all you ever do is lather, rinse and repeat. You do the same things over and over again only to turn around and have to do it yet again. You take care of a problem only to have it pop back and again…lather, rinse repeat.
I had the same conversation with my 8 year old daughter this morning. Why do you keep doing the same thing that gets you in trouble over and over and over again? If you touch a hot stove and burn your hand, are you going to touch it again? Her answer was no because it would hurt. So, then I asked if she had to get hurt for her to learn. It was a smart ass question but it does make me stop to wonder. Because the truth is pain doesn’t always stop the whole “Lather, Rinse and Repeat” cycle. Common sense tells us that if it hurts, you don’t do it again. But what about in a relationship?
If you get hurt in a relationship, do you follow common sense and just quit? Or, do you hold your ground and “Lather, Rinse and Repeat” ? Sure, there are some pains that will make you jump off the band wagon faster than you can get an ouch out. But what if it’s little pains? You try and try and try and try yet again but the same issue comes up. What then? How does one know when enough is enough of the whole lather, rinse and repeat? At what point does your brain overtake your heart and basically tell it “Look dummy, sure you love him/her but seriously there are no more parts to break, it’s time to throw in the towel!” ?
Sadly, we don’t exactly have those cool boxing ref’s who will step in and stop the cycle or even a circuit breaker that will flip when it gets over loaded. We are left on our own to figure out when enough is enough. It is up to us to decide when the brain wins over the heart. It’s not easy…but then, who said life was? More over, who ever said relationships are. Just comes down to deciding which is the path you can live with? Going your own way or…Lather, Rinse and Repeat.
